Question #2

Give one example of logos, one example of ethos, and one example of pathos in Mark Antony's speech and explain how each one helped to sway the crowd to his side.

  1. First? It is very clear that Mark Antony appeals to ethos, logos and pathos in his speech. The first appeal that the romans knew before the speech is ethos. Mark Antony was a very close freind of Caesars and renowned among the romans. So what he had to say was very important to the roman people. Pathos is appealed by Antony somewhat indirectly questioning Brutus's honor and accusations. Finally, through out the entire speech there is an appeal to logos. Mark Antony used facts to disclaim Caesars ambition and Brutus's honor. The backwards way he does it though makes people reason for themselves that the assassination was a mindless and power hungry act. With these three elements this speech became a powerful weapon and easily swayed the crowd.

  2. First, I want to say nice job Caleb, you young stunna. Second, I hope all of you come up with something original, because else Caleb just slammed you. Anyways, so lets start with the ethos, Mark Anthony was a very close friend of Caesars and this is shown throughout his speech. He states clearly that he is Caesars friend and that Caesar was his friend and that he cared deeply about him. It is easy for the people to see that Mark Anthony has a credibility that can be trusted. Next, Mark Anthony tackle logos. He is very logical with the people reminding them of the good deeds that Caesar had done, not in the name of ambition as the "honorable" Brutus had said but instead, for the good of the people. It is easy for the crowd to realize that Caesar had done many good deeds and that Brutus was trying to sway them away from the fact that he had killed their emperor in cold blood. Finally, throughout the whole speech Mark Anthony is appealing to Pathos. He is making the Romans feel guilty towards themselves. Fell guilty at how they had just cheered for the slaughter of their leader. Guilty for "losing their reason". He also shows his own sorrows for the loss of his friend and leader, "My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me." By appealing to all three: ethos, pathos, and logos, he was able to give a very persuasive speech that made the crowd question whether they had done the right thing. Just want to shout out to all the people that are about to follow Caleb and I, you can't do it as good as we done. If you're trying to then, good luck have fun. Cause we the best theres eva been. Keep on killin' til the end. Yes its just Caleb and me my friend. I'm sorry if your feeling left out. But that is what we're all about. Cause the top of the mountain is a climb. But thats what we did and left all you behind.....bahahhaa if only I could rap. Well anyway......night.

  3. Magic man thinks very highly of himself indeed. Probably warranted. One example of how Antony established ethos is by telling the crowd that he, "comes to bury Caesar, not to praise him." This would have calmed down the Romans who were aready in a tither because of Brutus' speech and were loathe to hear any opposing viewpoint. I agree with Magic man when he says that pathos is established when he states that, "my hear is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause til it comes back to me." Many humans feel empathy when they see another human suffer. Antony was a brave soldier and it must have affected the Romans deeply to see him basically break down before the crowd. Brillant! Logos is addressed when Antony proclaims, "I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke but I am hear to speak what I do know." Here Antony makes it clear to the Romans that he is depending on his own logic, thus refusing to be manipulated by a man who may have less than "honorable" motives. When the Romans see an example of a man willing to willing to trust his own assessment of the situation, they will be more willing to do the same. BTW, Magic Man, by Heart, is one of my favorite songs.

  4. Ok, well lets start off by saying I totally agree with Caleb. And Magic Man. and Ms.Mo. So...here we go. Logos is used all throughout the speech. I think one of the most convincing uses of logos is when Mark Anthony says "You all did see on the Lupercal, I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?" That right there is logic you just can't argue with. The Roman people were there. They saw it happen. They can't deny it. And Mark Anthony lays on his ethos when he tells them "He was my friend, faithful and just to me". That right there says hey listen to me Caesar was my friend I know what I'm saying about him. And the pathos is used twice, once when he says "When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept" and again when he says "Bear with me; my heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause till it come back to me." The first one shows you wow Caesar really did care about us. I mean, he wept with the poor. Not the rich and powerful who give him money and support, but the poor, the ones who don't matter politically. And the second one shows you that Caesar must have been a good man if he has friends who are so distraught by his death as Mark Anthony is. The way he uses these things, and especially the order in which he uses them, really helps diffuse the crowd's mob mentality that Brutus had created and make them start to think on their own.

  6. An example of how Mark Antony appealed to ethos was when he said, "I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke but here I am to speak what I do know." This establishes respect from the Romans and persuades them to listen to Mark Antony's speech because he appears to be showing respect to the man the whole crowd has just sided with. Next, Mark Antony appeals to logos by giving many examples throughout the speech of the things Caesar did for the good of others and his country. And finally, Mark Antony appeals to pathos by making the crowd feel gulity that they had just turned on the leader of their country, of whom they used to love so much, just because of Brutus. Using these three rhetorical strategies contrubuted to Mark Antony's success in winning over the crowd by the end of his speech.

  7. I like the rap caleb. Anyway Ethos- I think that the strongest example of this is that Marc Antony is willing to stand up to those who would wish to silence him and praise his friend in an unpopular time. This shows that he is an extremely loyal person and this creates a great deal of credibility. Pathos- Marc Antony gave his speech emotional sway simply be having the courage to be sad for Ceaser himself, but he creates emotion within the croud by highlighting their fickle nature by pointing out times they had loved Ceaser as well as ways in which Ceaser had looked out for their better interestsm, this created guilt, regret, and sense of loss within the crowd. Logos- This is the most common theme within the speech, Marc Antony repeatedly brings up examples of Ceaser's good record with Rome and lightly mentions Bruts's name eventually creating a very clear, fact driven picture of who is in the right and who is in the wrong.

  8. Marc Antony was very close to Ceasar therefore what he was saying helped persuade the crowd to listen to him (ethos). He appealed to emotion (pathos) by talking about the weeping of the poor and that his heart is in the coffin with Ceasar. Logos is used throughout the whole speech, he uses examples of Ceasars actions to prove his innocence.

  9. Caleb that rap was swull, and so are these thoughts inside my skull. All these lyrics bouncing about, it would be insanity to not let them all out. So I'll start first and foremost with raps greatful dead, the biggy and 2pac come to my head. But they got nothing on this game, compared to the way we rose to the fame. Caleb lays the line and I provide the hook, together we catch the biggest fish ever took. I'll tell you once more why were ahead of our time, haha just look I got your reading my lines. And maybe you say this rap is crap, but you're the one reading it so take it back. Cause as Caleb said we're the kings of this town, aint no one left who can compete around. So I'll end with this, no don't frown, are picking up what we're laying down.

  10. Ethos- We should listen to him, because he was close to Ceaser and has some background with him.
Pathos- He makes people think about their OWN personal relationship with Ceaser.
Logos- all the different factual stuff he said about ceaser and whatnot

  11. This kinda sucks getting here after everyone 'cause I'm pretty sure anything I say will have already been said. But I'll take a crack at it anyway. Marc Anthony uses Ethos to his advantage by getting the crowd to listen to him initially because they believed that he had something valuable to say relating to Caesar and that was the reason that they all gathered in the first place. He then uses logos and ethos in tandem to A, get them to see how flawed Brutus was as a person, and B, to get the crowd to understand that even though Caesar my have not been perfect, he still was a good person and he cared about his people.

  13. Yeah well since everyone posted ill just repeat what they said in my "own words".

    Ethos- His relationship with Ceasar
Pathos- Gives examples of how bad he really is
Logos- How "great" Ceasar was worked in his favor by showing the opposite

  14. Ethos was used to describe his relationship with Caesar and how great it was. "When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:", this is Mark Anthony using pathos. It shows how Caesar was and his personality, and how he has been there for them. Logos is facts that Mark Anthony used about Caesar. For example, "He hath brought many captives home to Rome, Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:"
